Things have been a bit busy here this year - what with school, preschool and a new business to help run, so my dolls have taken a bit of a back seat. Lately things have quietened down a wee bit and I've picked up the tricot, and the wool and found a spare 6 0r 7 hours here and there to sew a couple of dolls. They are up on my Etsy site with another to join them in the next couple of days.

I've enjoyed looking back through photos to see how my doll making has evolved over the last few years. They are all gorgeous but I'm very happy with the dirrection they are taking.

I know some people think Steiner dolls are overpriced but really -each doll takes at least 6 or 7 hours to do. The clothes can take hours, long hair takes a looong time and the high quality materials I use are expensive but make the difference between an ordinary doll and a special doll. I try to keep my prices as reasonable as I can :)

Keep an eye out for some felt creations in the next few weeks. I am lucky to count as a friend a very talented lady who is highly skilled in Steiner wool felt work and she has been teaching me! How lucky am I? I am currently a bit gnome obsessed and my kids have been the recipients of my practice gnomes while I perfect my technique. They are taking over the house!

So I made this Milo vest for Toby. It's very boyish but also huge on him.It's also too big for Miya but I think she can get away with it. When I told her I wouold be unravelling it she wouldn't hear of it and claimed it as her own. I think it suits her :)

She also wanted to model my new Whisper Cardigan. Gorgeous girl :)

Felting Fun and my first gnome!

Some serious crafting took place at my house over the weekend. The kids and I tried our hand at felt ball making..may I say not quite as easy at it looks but still lots of fun. Ours are a little less dense than they probably should be but then they were wound by little hands. Toby lost interest after a while and amused himself greatly with hitting the play equipment with a metal pole he found lying about. Miya was in soapy, crafting heaven and is well pleased with her efforts.

After we had cleaned up I had a try at creating my first needle felted gnome. I found this fabulous tutorial and here is the result. I only stabbed myself once! He's a bit fuzzy still but I think it adds to his charm :)

My home computer is not well...actually it's just a problem with the on off switch but it's proving a pain to fix. The man of the house has finally agreed to me taking it to the repairers on Monday. I'm on the ancient lappy with no photo softwear which means I can't show you the gorgeous dolls I've been making! I've stepped things up a bit and they too cute. I have three finished so far. When my computer comes back to life they'll be up on Ozebaby...and I'll post some pics here :)

I've been busy, forgot my blogger log in, hubby started a new business, Christmas...blah blah blah!
I'm back now!

Life is moving along nicely here. I'm about to send the big one back to school and the little one to his first year of Montessori Cycle 1 at the tender age of 3.

It will be huge for us with Toby at Monti preschool 3 days a week. I'm hoping for a little me time and a lot of sewing time and working with hubby time. Hopefully I can squeeze in some knitting time here and there too. The days fill up fast.

I've been sewing and knitting now that we are back from 3 weeks in Sydney over Christmas. Since arriving home I have sewn multiple nappies, wipes and trifolds, knitted 1 sock, 1 dolls cardigan and a small amount of a cardigan for me.

I've also sewn this little guy.

He's naked at the moment but once dressed will be up for sale at Ozebaby. Can you think of a good name for him? I'm stumped. He will likely be dressed in a wee pair of overalls and a shirt. or maybe pants and a shirt. I haven't decided :)

Last weekend we built a "day spa" for the chooks in order to give them the free range lifestyle without the destruction of the vege gardens. I'm still thinking a chook dome or two would be the ultimate solution...

A new bag for me

My much loved bag has a hole so I've made a new one. I picked out the pattern and bought the fabric a month or so ago and have only now found the time to sew it up. I used this free online tutorial. It was great to use - lots of photos and detailed instructions. Echino outer and demin inner. I love it!

I really enjoy knitting socks. I like the wee little needles and the beautiful yarns. Here's a pair I gifted to my mother in law who tells me they are the best socks she ever had. :) Nice woman...easily pleased :)

Miya is loving Jazz Ballet and has so far performed twice. The dance she and her classmates are performing at the moment is to Dancing Queen. Only a 5 year old can get away with that outfit!

An evening of fun...mostly

Yesterday we took the kids to a local community carnival for a spot of fun, and Abba tribute band and their first fireworks. We met up with friends and met some more while we were there. During the Abba performance fellow groupies Miya and her friend wormed their way to the front of the mini mosh pit. "I"'s mum and I watch from a few metres back as our girls had an awesome time bopping along to Abba. The final song was played and we moved forward to collect the girls...then the lights went out and the fireworks started. The crowd surged around the stage.
I managed to see Miya and grab her but we couldn't find her little friend. What seems like ages but was probably 3 or 4 minutes passed before we located her. My heart is still beating fast this morning when I think about it. Our children are so so precious and I thank God that we found "I" so quickly.

We walk a fine line between letting our children experience the world (in this instance, the mini mosh pit and the excitement of the concert) and wanting to hold their hands all the way through life. I want my children to grow and experience the world....not to be stiffled by an over protective mother (which is my natural tendency)

Why couldn't the concert organisers have done what the Wiggles do? Warn parents that the lights are going down soon and to find their kids and hug them tight.

Tilly had her first trip to the groomer today at the age of 6 1/2!
Being a Border Terrier she has a coat that needs hand stripping. I usually do it but I really don't do a great job. This visit has been long overdue!
She looks so cute! I can see the gorgeous red in her coat again :) And who could resist those beautiful brown eyes??

Probably the most tragic thing I have ever cooked.

It started when the mixture looked a bit thick. I thought it would spread out in the oven. It didn't.

I pulled it out when I thought it would be done as I had to pick Miya up from school. It wasn't.

I filled the resulting hole in with icing which kind of worked until we cut the cake. See photo.

Toby liked it and as it was for his birthday that's the main thing :)

We have had the best holiday with our dear friends. You know the kind of friends you might not see for two years but can just pick up where you left off?
Almost two weeks of hanging out, playing with the kids, drinking wine, eating cheese, building gates, knitting, surfing, swimming, canoeing.....bliss :)

Miya shed some tears when she had to say goodbye to her dear friend Eleanor. We hope it won't be two years till they can see each other again.

I can't quite find the words to express the sadness I feel at the horror that so many everyday people have had to face this week.
My little knot dolls have proved a popular soothe toy with little ones. In memory of the little ones who have lost their lives this week I will have as many knot dolls as I can make available for sale at the Gossamer Dreams stocking this Sunday 15th. All proceeds from the sale of these dolls will be donated to the Red Cross Bushfire appeal. Please check our blog for the stocking time.

I miss her

She drives me insane with her constant questions and chatter...but man it's quiet here without her. She will always be my baby and I'm having just a wee bit of trouble accepting the fact that my baby is now my big school girl. She went off to school happily today despite complaining that she doesn't like her maroon polo. Don't blame her really. I don't like it either! Bring on the new uniform I say.
I'm so proud of her and in awe of her resilency :)

First day at School!

Miss Miya is now a big school girl! Here she is ready for her first day - complete with her cardboard fliptop mobile phone in case she needs to make a phone call!
Her uniform is a bit dull because her school is having a uniform change this year and we have been asked to send them in plain maroon until the new spiffy uniform is available.

We decided last week to enrol her in the Montessori program being offered at one of our local state schools and we are very excited to be part of the program.
No tears from Miya...plenty from me after I left the room. I'm so proud of my confident girl and can't wait to hear about her day this afternoon.

The shelves are a bit bare as most of the Montessori materials are arriving at the school this afternoon :)

First canoe trip

Toby, Rob and Pa took the canoe out for a paddle last week. It was Toby's first time out and he loved it! His Pa is a keen paddler from way back so I'm sure it gave him a lot of pleasure to take Toby out on his very first trip.

Baptism Day

Little hands

Miya wanted to learn how to sew buttons on to fabric, and of course Toby wasn't to be left out. I pulled out the threading boards lovingly made by their late Poppy and some plastic scoobie string and he was away.

Miya spied some spotty green fabric at Spotlight a while ago and asked for a dress. Now she already has a spotty green dress just a shade or two darker but the fabric was 1/2 price and who am I to argue.
So...here's this afternoon's accomplishment. Portobello Pixie pattern - Claire, size 5. Spotty green plus devine Sandi Henderson prints in the bodice, sleeves and ruffle. I think it works. Miya says she looks like Snow White :)

What we did on the weekend

Saturday was lovely and rainy! Such a nice change from stiffling heat followed by a brief thunderstorm. We did a few home things in the morning and then headed out to SouthBank to the Gallery of Modern Art. They have an awesome kids program on at the moment with heaps of activities for budding artists. We really enjoyed this darked room with UV lights and glowing cardboard shapes to fit together. No photo of Toby I know but you try telling a 2 year old to keep still for 3 seconds while the shutter stays open!

On Sunday after Church we had a bite of lunch then tackled the kids new play equipment purchased to replace the swings etc that were smashed in the storm. It took all afternoon but we are very pleased with the results. There are two more modules to add when they come back into stock. We purchased the Playing Mantis set from Muffin Kids and Ken's service was excellent!

The equipment is set up under our new shade sail that Rob put up last week. It will be so nice for the kids to have a shady place to play. You can see the new fence in the background too. To see the old fence and what happened to it (and the old play equipment) check out this post.

Wood Craft

Rob's way :)

Rob is never one to let an opportunity pass him by. When he saw these logs on the verge of the road he just had to stop. A conversation with the owner of the house revealed the logs were his if he could move them. He managed it and before I knew it there were maybe 6 huge logs in our yard....just a few months before the storm blew half our trees down.

Anyway, several logs are now part of the new fence and the others are destined to become benches around the yard. Here's a pic of Rob doing some freestyle chainsaw work...with his chipmunk cheeked offsider standing at a safe distance.

Our Christmas Lunch

I just found out today that Mel from Head in the Sand tagged me for my Christmas Day menu!

Here tis:

Breakfast: Everyday cereal and toast because after a small amount of present opening there was only a tiny window of time to eat, get dressed and get to church by 7.45 in order to get a seat inside for the 8am Christmas Day Service.

Lunch: Lunatic me decided a roast lunch would be lovely! Our good friend John joined us.

Roast Turkey, Roast Pork with crackling, baked potatoes, kumera and pumpkin with broccoli and beans.
Dessert was home made individual pavlovas topped with whipped cream, mixed berries and grated chocolate. Yum :)

Dinner: Pretty much the exact same meal as at lunch!

This sensory doll is 38 cm long, made of cotton velour and stuffed with wool. She has a little bag of sand in her tummy to give her a realistic weight.

Preschool concert

We just got back from Miya's end of year Preschool concert and breakup party. She has had a fabulous year and I can't speak highly enough of her teachers and C & K preschooling.
She looked so sweet in a gorgeous smocked dress given to her by Lesley of Cherubs Kiss and had a ball singing Christmas carols and preschool songs with her friends. I swear that child was born for the stage. Not too many photos as most of them have other children in them and I don't have permission to post their heads on the web :)

My fruit & veg shopping consists of pulling up outside my collection point less than 10 minutes from my house and picking up my box. I don't even have to get the kids out of the car!
The fruit and veg is seasonal, fresh and delicious!

Toby and I went shopping this morning and bought a new seat for him to use on the big toilet as the potty hasn't been cutting it in terms of *ahem* containment.
He really likes it :)

Said potty seat was extracted from his head with the help of a liberal smearing of butter and mummy casting her mind back to remember the position of a baby's head as it exits the birth canal!

We have a new resident in the chook shed!Now snakes don't particularly creep me out, nor spiders. Bees are another matter altogether.
It's not big enough to eat the chooks. It can have the eggs.
I would just like it gone and Rob is away and I'm not going near it so there it stays. Hopefully it will just move on in the night. Good thing I didn't send Miya down to get the eggs - she may have come back with it draped over her shoulders!

"Mummy I wish Jodie had three babies" (my friend has twin girls)
"Why is that"
"Cause then I could be one of her babies and live at her house and she could be my mummy"

I am taking part in a cupcake challenge over at Nappycino
I baked the cupcakes this morning then popped over to my lovely friend Lesley to pick up my brand new piping bag. Can I just say it is awesome! I was using a Tupperware piping ball and I find the bag sooo much easier to use. I also took my first foray into the world of fondant...made from scratch mind you (thanks again Lesley for the recipe). Here's what I came up with.

This little guy is my favourite I think.

These two monkeys spent the whole time time I was decorating the cupcakes stealing fondant and asking when they could have the piggie and the butterfly.

Dolls

I've been enjoying a break from sewing nappies and have been indulging my love of Steiner Dolls lately. I really like their simplicity and the fact that most of the sewing is done by hand so I can do it upstairs while watching TV. Not very much in keeping with Steiner philosophies but there you have it. Here are a few of my creations.I'm thinking Miya and Toby might like a doll each for Christmas :)
